Pregnancy is a beautiful journey, but it can also bring aches, fatigue, and emotional ups and downs. Taking time to care for yourself is not indulgent, it’s essential for both your wellbeing and your baby’s.
Maternity massage is a gentle, nurturing way to ease tension in your back, shoulders, and legs, helping to improve circulation and reduce swelling. It can also support better sleep, lower stress, and promote a sense of calm during this transformative time.
Reflexology works on specific points in the feet to encourage balance throughout the body. Many expectant mothers find it helps with relaxation, eases pregnancy-related discomforts, and supports emotional wellbeing.
Both therapies are safe when tailored for pregnancy and provide a special opportunity to slow down, reconnect with your body, and nurture yourself as you nurture your little one.
Taking even a short pause for care can have a lasting positive impact, because when you feel cared for, your body, mind, and baby all benefit.
Winter is a season where many of us slow down physically… but the body actually has more to process.
We move less.
We eat more comfort food.
We spend more time indoors with central heating and less sunlight.
All of this can leave the lymphatic system feeling sluggish.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, rhythmic technique that supports the body’s natural ability to drain waste, boost immunity and calm the nervous system and winter is the PERFECT time to receive it.
Here’s why:
1. Winter often means slower circulation
Cold temperatures cause blood vessels to narrow. Muscles tighten. Joints feel stiffer. This can reduce circulation and create a feeling of heaviness or puffiness.
MLD stimulates lymph flow improving circulation, easing stagnation, and helping the body feel lighter and clearer again.
2. Immune support becomes essential in cold and flu season
Your lymphatic system is a core part of your immune system.
When it’s moving well you feel more resilient.
MLD encourages lymphocyte activity and helps the body flush cellular waste more efficiently. This gives your immune system more capacity to respond, rather than being weighed down.
3. It calms the nervous system and soothes emotional stress
Winter often brings emotional fatigue as well as shorter days, less daylight, more overwhelm, more time indoors.
MLD works through the parasympathetic nervous system, the “rest and restore” part of the body.
Most clients feel deeply relaxed, sometimes even drifting off to sleep during treatment. This can support emotional balance, mood, and hormonal regulation.
4. Supports digestion and bloating (common in winter)
Colder months often lead to richer foods, more sugar, more celebrations — which can affect digestion.
MLD around the abdomen can support lymphatic flow around the gut, helping ease bloating and digestive sluggishness.
5. Encourages warmth, softness and connection with your own body
Winter often pulls us up into our heads.
MLD helps you drop into the body and feel held.
Clients often tell me:
“I feel like someone has hit the reset button.”
That’s because MLD isn’t just physical, it’s deeply regulating.
Winter is the season of nourishment
MLD honours that.
It meets your body where it is gently, respectfully, and supports it back to balance.
Herbal teas all have unique properties that can help to enhance your heath and complement your wellbeing. These are just a few teas that are beneficial for the lymphatic system and are recommended as part of your aftercare routine.
Dandelion root helps the body in many ways. It increases urine production (diuretic), improves digestion (bitter tonic), supports the pancreas, and encourages bile flow (cholagogue). It can also boost milk production in nursing mothers (galactagogue), reduce joint pain (anti-rheumatic), support liver and blood circulation, relieve mild constipation, fight urinary infections, cleanse the body of toxins, and help with skin conditions like eczema.
Red clover helps clear blockages in the body, relaxes muscles, and soothes irritation. It supports overall health by gently stimulating and balancing the body, especially benefiting the throat and salivary glands. It has anti-inflammatory properties and is believed to help shrink tumors, particularly in the ovaries and breasts. Traditionally, it has been used as a tea to cleanse the lymphatic system.
Burdock root is great for the blood and overall health. Its root has natural antibiotic properties that fight staph infections. It helps the body adapt to stress (adaptogen), fights fungal infections, supports liver and lymphatic health, promotes sweating (diaphoretic), increases urine flow (diuretic), and relieves mild constipation. It can also help lower blood sugar (hypoglycaemic), stimulate appetite (orexigenic), improve digestion (bitter), and may have anti-tumor properties.
I reluctantly gave up my therapies in 2012 after 18 years in business. My life had become hugely stressful going through a divorce and a family breakdown. I was done. Exhausted. And broken. I just couldn’t keep going. As I’m ace at masking, people didn’t know how ill I had become. I would put a huge amount of effort into any interactions I made, keeping a smile on my face and chatting away as normal. When I went home I would have to go to my bed and would fall into a deep sleep. I had to work round my children as well, keeping as alert as I could for them. This continued for years until eventually I realised I had chronic fatigue syndrome. Once I knew this I could investigate strategies to put in place to help me slowly recover.
The strategies I put in place were
Implementing strong boundaries. I realise I cant cope with drama, bitching and gossiping so I keep myself to myself. My circle is small and the people I spend time with are precious.
Taking supplements such as vitamin C, zinc, vitamin D, golden flax seed oil, probiotics.
Drinking at least two litres of water every day.
Eating healthily – cutting out sugar.
Strict with my working hours. I don’t work outside my allocated hours – there’s always the temptation to work more and more especially in these challenging times, but it’s a fool’s game and only brings burn out and resentment.
Giving up false responsibility. I am only responsible for my own happiness. I can offer support and kindness to people without entering into their own personal chaos.
Making time for myself and doing things I enjoy.
Self care
Because my life is much quieter now, I can hear my own needs much clearer, which means my life is more balanced and healthy.
