Most essential oils are too strong to use neat on the skin therefore require to be blended with a carrier oil. These are usually vegetable oils such as wheatgerm, jojoba and avocado oils. As with essential oils, carrier oils each have an array of properties. For example wheatgerm is a highly nourishing oil rich in vitamin E, avocado oil is also a rich nourishing oil and is high in essential fatty acids making it excellent for dry and mature skin types. Mineral oils such as baby oil have larger molecules that are not as easily absorbed by the skin and are therefore not used in aromatherapy massage.
